Improving Education Processes Through Six Sigma

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

All corporate and educational organizations have the same goals for successful results, the continued increase and expertise of their employees and students. The path to impoving student performance in an education setting is accomplished by educational professionals continually enhancing and implementing new ideas.

The new ideas and processes include techniques, learning aids, etc. Improvement to student education which lends to the better reputation of the institution are the results of the new processes. Six Sigma is one of those processes which can improve an educational institution.

It originally was created to meet strategic goals in the business community. The approach lies in looking at the customer first, which magnifies defects in a system which will be more expensive to the educational institution. The culture within the institution is crucial in the success of Six Sigma. Often the culture must be changed to reap the rewards of a successful deployment of the Six Sigma methodology.

Six Sigma is the premier tool for quality management. To address the educational side, teachers represent the employees and parents become the customers. The issue or problem has to be identified before the Six Sigma program can be rolled out. When that problem is noted, then the methodology can be put into motion to help reduce the problem or get rid of it altogether.

Six Sigma requires the enthusiastic participation of all individuals at all levels, starting at the senior level. Innovation and creativity are encouraged through the basic Six Sigma principles, and a module developed to establish good communication between teachers and students. The application of Six Sigma within an educational setting will mean that everyone will see positive changes in teaching methods, along with a positive result. With proper education, qualitative learning is achieved and desired goals reached.

Why a 4.0 GPA won’t get you into Harvard – and what will

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

First, there’s absolutely no need to freak out if you’re not the valedictorian or salutatorian of your high school.

I bet you didn’t know that the great majority of student admits to Harvard and Stanford aren’t valedictorians, either.

Here’s what you need to know about your GPA and class rank to go to an Ivy League school:

1) It’s ok to have a mediocre freshman year GPA and class rank. What’s important is that you SHOW IMPROVEMENT and an UPWARD TREND over time

2) Equally important are your transcript and the classes you take. Be sure to take the HARDEST CLASSES your high school offers – APs, IB, etc

3) Make your junior year count. It’s the one that Admissions Committees focus the most on – you want your best grades in this year

4) Don’t forget about your SAT score. It counts as much (and sometimes even more) than your high school grades

5) As long as you’re in the top 5 percent of your class, roughly speaking, you’ll be fine

Im not recommending you do only the BARE MINIMUM needed. You should always aim to be #1 in your class.

I went through this process awhile back and was accepted to 6 Ivy League schools and Stanford, so I speak from experience about this process. I wrote a book on how to get into any college called Hopeless to Harvard.

Follow my 5 critical steps above, and you’ll be a strong candidate. Focus your energies on your passions – whether that’s sports, science, or social studies.

Last minute application tips to get into Harvard and Stanford

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Many of you will wait until the last-minute before seriously considering college applications. It’s a horrible idea, and the last thing Id recommend.

Im guilty of it as well – that’s what my last minute guide to Harvard and Stanford admissions is all about – how to make yourself sound like a top candidate in the weeks and months that you have left. And if you follow my 5 secret steps below, I guarantee you will have a better shot at Harvard, Yale, or Stanford.

1) Take a deep breath, because you’re about to work really, really, really hard. If you’re a junior or even a senior, you only have a few months. I‘ll show you how to use it wisely

2) Go crazy busy in your last summer before college applications. College admissions committees look at this summer extremely closely to see what you can accomplish. What do you truly love to do? MAKE SURE you spend your last summer working on those interests

3) If you don’t have strong academics, you must start now. Get good grades in every class. Take college classes over the summer to show that you can do well on that level. Take as many AP tests (and do well in them) as you possibly can in the remaining time

4) Treat the Common Application like you’d treat your best friend. Spend countless hours pouring your soul into your essays, asking teachers for great recommendations, and making sure your supplemental info is perfect. This is your face to the world – make sure it’s not dirty

5) Think of yourself as a salesman. You need to convince admissions committees that you’re the right candidate. This means showing yourself in the best light possible – highlighting and exaggerating accomplishments if needed

The above 5 tricks will get you to a great start. Focus on telling a compelling life story – since you have little time left, you have to stand-out in an entertaining way. That’s the only way you’ll have a chance at getting into Stanford or MIT. Admissions committees love stories.

Good luck!

3 steps to extracurricular activities that impress Harvard

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Extracurricular accomplishments are tough to judge, because they vary widely by school, by region, and by state.

There are obvious organizations and competitions – for instance, Key Club and Science Olympiad.

For the rest, it comes down to a qualitative judgment. That’s why you should do everything you can to stand out, regardless of what club you’re in.

Having worked in College Admissions for 3 years (as well as being a former Ivy Leaguer), I‘ve developed several rules on exactly what students need to do with extracurriculars like science and debate to win the college admissions game.

Here’s what you must accomplish:

1) Leadership positions that are SCHOOLWIDE – like student government and class government. It’s impressive because you stand out across the entire school. Princeton will be impressed.

2) Participation in the ECs where your school has distinction. Most College Admissions Committees know what each school is good at (for instance, Lincoln-Douglas debate) – participating in your schools strongest activities will stand out at Columbia

3) Anything that leads to national or international recognition – given the competition these days, it’s the best way to stand apart from the pack for the Ivy Leagues

As I mention in Hopeless To Harvard, 50% of your success is your accomplishments. The other 50% is how you present it in the application.

Focus on describing the impact and results of your leadership and extracurricular activities. Don’t just talk about what you did – talk about why it was important and why it mattered to you

Follow the secret steps above, and you’ll be opening an admissions packet from your dream school in no time!

Why starting early helps you get into Harvard and Stanford

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Many of you will wait until junior or senior year before worrying about college applications. I did that, and got lucky – getting accepted at Harvard, Yale, Stanford and a few other schools. There are many strategies I discovered to make this happen – but you’ll have to read my website to find out what they are.

Here, Id like to talk about what you can do when you’re a freshman or sophomore. When you have a lot of time to plan and work hard. My time as an Admissions Officer really showed me the difference between those that plan ahead, and those that don’t make the grade.

1) Make sure your grades and standardized test scores are taken care of. Take every hard class you can (AP-level), and do well in the SAT. Harvard expects you to have challenged yourself with every academic opportunity

2) Participate in a few clubs that really show what your interests and spike (eg, environment, education, poverty, science, etc). Become the leader – and do interesting things as the leader, like increase membership, partner with other schools, plan conferences, etc

3) Sports and music help A LOT – they demonstrate a well-rounded individual that every top school wants

4) NATIONAL and/or INTERNATIONAL awards, prizes, and scholarships are the fastest way to distinguish yourself in this competitive environment. Admissions is simply too competitive to just dominate your high school

Make sure your accomplishments and experiences tell a STORY ABOUT YOUR LIFE. Admissions committees want to know that you have clear interests, clear goals in life, and all those things are reflected by your essays, recs, and experiences

The worst applicants are those that do a little of everything. They play music, play sports, are in 10 different clubs. They don’t stand out – and they don’t get into Stanford or Princeton.

Always value depth of success over breadth.

TELL A STORY in your application. That’s the one secret. People forget that 50% of your chance at Harvard is in your application. The other 50% is the hard work you’ve done to get to this point.
