Duke College Football Update

Monday, October 5th, 2009

David Cutcliffe pulled off a sharp coaching judgment by quickly announcing Sunday that Thad Lewis might be his starter for this week’s showdown against the Kansas Jayhawks.

But I have just one problem with the way Cutcliffe went about things. It basically is such a trifling thing and I hesitated to even mention it, although felt bound to do it.

Cutcliffe revealed Lewis was one of a selection of athletes who had caught the flu and sat out in practice time.

If you tell me Lewis is the man, I am fine with that, mostly because I don’t have a choice and you can care less what my opinion is. However there is furthermore the fact that you are the head coach/qb authority and know more than I will ever recognize regarding that position.

There is no need to tell me Lewis is not one hundred percent.

He noticeably said he did not want to create a qb controversy, but, as the majority of people know, quarterback debates nine times outside 10 are started by fans and media, not personnel.

If a quarterback controversy manifests because of Renfree’s great play and Lewis’ not so nice play then deal with it if the questions appear.

While I agree with his choice and swiftness of it he can have opened up a undersized door for criticism of his starter.

If Lewis does not play well at Kansas then Cutcliffe will certainly receive questions about whether or not Lewis is one hundred percent and if he is not, why isn’t Renfree playing in the game?.

So for the coach’s good I hope Lewis steps up and is victorious or has a good game, because the absolutely last thing the team needs at present in the wake of the great motivator of defeating Army is a controversy.

Just ask Coach K if you’re in search of a second opinion. He has had to cope with one or two of situations like this one.

NCAA Coach Cutliffe Must Make Up Mind

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

David Cutcliffe made a clever coaching judgment by swiftly announcing Sunday that Thad Lewis would be his starter for this Saturday’s matchup against the Kansas Jayhawks.

Although I have only one dilemma with the way Cutcliffe went about this. It really is such a trifling factor and I was reluctant to even mention it, but felt obligated to do it.

Cutcliffe confirmed Lewis was one of a range of players who had gotten the flu and missed practice time.

If you tell me Lewis is a hero, I am okay with that, basically since I don’t have a choice and you might care less what my belief is. Although there’s furthermore the fact that you’re the head coach/qb authority and understand a bunch more than I will ever recognize regarding that position.

There is no need to tell me Lewis is not 100 percent.

He definitely claimed he didn’t want to create a qb controversy, although, as the majority of people understand, qb controversies 9 times beyond ten are started by enthusiasts and media, not coaches.

If a quarterback controversy manifests as a result of Renfree’s good play and Lewis’ not so nice play then deal with it if the questions appear.

While I agree with his choice and swiftness of it he may have opened up a small door for criticism of his starter.

If Lewis doesn’t perform favorably at Kansas then Cutcliffe will certainly be hit with questions regarding whether or not Lewis is 100 percent and if he is not, why isn’t Renfree playing more?.

So for the coach’s well being I hope Lewis steps up and is victorious or has a great game, because the absolutely last issue the team needs presently in the wake of the great motivator of defeating Army is a controversy.

Just ask Coach K if you’re in search of a second opinion. He has had to deal with one or 2 of those.

Marquies Gray Looks for Second Chance

Friday, September 18th, 2009

When MarQuies Gray agreed to play football for the Minnesota Golden Gophers last year,, several fans saw him as the heart of the Minnesota football team. A qb who has distinct physical talent and a frame meant for different positions, it appeared like Gray showed a handful of considerable upside.

The star prospect (by Rivals) from Indiana had been predestined to be a member of the franchise in 2008, but his attempt to join in finished ahead of time because of educational problems.

Luckily, he was able to acquire his academics settled out and presently has begun ‘09 as a rookie. But, contrary to last season against the likely chance of him being cut, Gray is being used as a weapon that might possibly be likened to that of Philadelphia with Donovan McNabb getting played by Adam Weber and Michael Vick being replaced with MarQueis Gray.

This would be an out of the ordinary arrangement in Minnesota if this was in fact valid.

Gray’s 6′4″, 222 pound frame makes him a threat with size alone not including his speed which is insisted to make him play maker at qb similar to that of Vick.

We saw a tiny preview of it this former week versus Syracuse as Gray lined up as a slot receiver in a Wildcat disparity.

With running back Duane Bennett vying to make a return to the offense and help invigorate the running-game in the recently established pro-style the Gophers possess converted to, Gray might be used all over the place to help spread the offense a little while then again maintaining the running game as a key aspect.

With Weber only in his junior season, it is in all likelihood that Gray will not see time as the full-time starting QB for a few more seasons, however if he winds up as advertised, Minnesota Gopher lovers might have something worth rooting for in the coming seasons.

The Best College Football Teams to Start the Season

Friday, August 28th, 2009

8. SEC’s – Ole Miss. The rebels are a team with a real chance of moving up in the voters eyes throughout the season because of 2 reasons. 1. They play in the SEC and 2. They have a chance to take on Florida in the SEC Championship game. Jevon Snead “The Tebow Slayer” has proven he can beat Florida and wants a chance to prove they are the best in the nation. Starting the season at # 8 with no real threats to losing until week 5 against Alabama and week 10/11 against Tennessee and LSU, respectively, they are highly favored to win the SEC West and meet the Gators in Atlanta. More likely to play in the BCS Sugar Bowlagainst a BigEast team.

7. Virginia Tech. A bit under the radar this year after a letdown in 2008, as the team lost four games. However, there’s really not much competition in the ACC and the Hokies should start out at number seven for that reason. A tough schedule may force them to sink in the rankings.

6. Ohio State. I could see Ohio State back in the national title game, assuming the team wins the games it’s supposed to. Terrell Pryor will do some great things for this team, and if they don’t make the BCS championship, a Rose Bowl is in the cards.

5. Alabama. It looks like Alabama has a good shot at the national title game this season. The only real things that stand in the way are LSU, Tennessee, and Ole Miss. Still, this team could easily finish with two losses or less.

4. USC. A very young team, but possibly the most talented one in football. The inexperience makes it difficult to believe they’ll go all the way, but an early match-up against Ohio State will set the tone for the season. I expect good things either way.

3. Big 12′s – Oklahoma. Oklahoma Sooners are a big favorite to upset Texas and represent the Big 12 in the Championship game. With returning Heisman winner Bradford and a returning receiver lineup that put up record numbers last year. Oklahoma has a tough schedule including BYU, Miami, Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska, and Oklahoma St, whom allthey should defeat.Oklahoma’s only speed bump and possible detour will be Texas in week 6. The winner of that game will represent 1 half of the BCS title game. If they miss the Title game they will more than likely play in theFiesta Bowl against the ACC or Undefeated WAC/MAC team.

2. Texas. The Longhorns are simply one of the best out there, and Colt McCoy should have a huge season, as he’s eyeing a Heisman. There aren’t many better defenses out there and Texas remains a favorite to make the title game.

1. Florida. As long as Tim Tebow is on the team, there’s no reason to discount this team’s ability. Almost all of the entire team last season (besides Harvin and Nelson) is back for another season, and Florida has the experience and the talent to go all away. The Gators are the favorites entering the season.

Duke Basketball in the Dumps? Please!

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

According to any member of the sports media, anyone who publishes a sports blog, and anyone who just hates Duke in general, the Blue Devils are on the way down. Are you serious?

The reason, they say, is the obvious: that Duke hasn’t won an NCAA title since 2001, and has missed the last five final fours.

If this is the measuring stick for success and lack thereof, I‘ll be happy with that kind of slippage any day of the week.

The sentiment is so utterly exaggerated in my mind, that the way they speak of Duke basketball, you’d think they were on the verge of being demoted to division II or III. Really!

Coach Ks decision to coach the next (2012) summer olympics team has fed more fuel into this fire. Many feel that this job distracts him from his duties as Duke head coach more than anything else.

The fact that Duke has won more games in the last decade than any other team, won last year’s ACC tournament, and made the Sweet Sixteen-a huge success for 95 percent of all other teams in college basketball-appears to be clearly lost on all of those supposed experts. Today’s society is all about what have you done for me lately and lately Duke has been good, not great. But can that really be classified as a slide?

To me, a slide is Kentucky’s recent NCAA tournament drought, although that is likely to end pretty soon. A slide is UNC winning only eight games a few years back or Indiana’s embarrassment over the last few seasons.

Duke has literally won 20+ games for each of the last 10 years, and is always in the discussion when it comes down to ACC champion or even NCAA champion. How can one label them as a failure?

Maybe their recruits have been weaker lately than in the past, and some of the team’s players have left school early to pursue professional careers, but Duke basketball has been (and still is) a success. No need to panic.

Just a few weeks ago, some local media experts predicted that Duke would win next year’s ACC championship. For a team that’s allegedly on the way down, Im surprised with such a pick.
