Play Offense When Seeking Athletic Scholarships

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Students in 2009 (and their families) can expect to pay about $80,000 for a four-year college program. What’s more, that figure continues to rise at the rate of 6.5% every year. If you are considering a private school, go ahead and double it. If, however you’ve been a good sport – literally – throughout high school, chances are you can look beyond standard student loans, financial aid and grants for assistance. Why not apply for an athletic scholarship? About $1.2 billion in scholarship money is awarded to students every year in exchange for their performance on various fields. Here are a few of the basics for you to kick around:

1. Age matters! To qualify to play sports at the college level you must be between’ and 24 years old. Your chances of landing a scholarship decrease the longer you wait to attend college after high school graduation, so plan to go straight from high school to college.

2. There are 29 sports recognized by the NCAA (National College Athletic Association) The womens list is a little longer and includes: Archery, Water Polo, Volleyball, Basketball, Bowling, Track & Field (Indoor and Outdoor), Cross Country, Tennis, Equestrian, Fencing, Synchronized Swimming, Swimming and Diving, Field Hockey, Golf, Squash, Softball, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer, Skiing (Cross Country and Downhill), Rowing and Rifle.

Female athletes have even more opportunities: Basketball, Volleyball, Track & Field (Indoor and Outdoor), Soccer, Tennis, Equestrian, Fencing, Synchronized Swimming, Swimming and Diving, Water Polo, Golf, Squash, Ice Hockey, Gymnastics, Archery, Lacrosse, Skiing (Cross Country and Downhill), Rowing and Field Hockey.

3. Unless you and your athleticism has already become a household name in your region, don’t count on a recruiter finding you. Instead, prepare a sports portfolio of your efforts and make sure that it gets on the desk of the coach you are trying to play for at the college level. A bio of your life in sports and as many newspaper and/or broadcast TV clips of your highlights will be fine.

4. Grades still come first. Although coaches ultimately make the decision about which athletes will be granted a scholarship, the decision isn’t based on athleticism alone. Far from it, in fact. Did you know that you have to be accepted by the admissions board prior to being considered? Your SAT score, as well as your high school GPA and other materials in your application packet all factor into the coach’s decision.

If you are lucky enough to land a full athletic scholarship, you have some thinking to do. College sports, while exciting, aren’t a golden ticket toward a lucrative professional sports contract after graduation. You’ll need to choose a major in a field that holds your interest so that you can launch a career outside of sports once you hang up your cleats (racket, swim cap, whatever). Success comes in many forms, so be ready for everything that life might bring.

When is the Ideal Time to Sign up for NCAA Clearinghouse?

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

The best time to sign up for the NCAA Clearinghouse is at the end of your academic Junior year. The Clearinghouse is imperative if you are going to compete at the D I or D II level.

Some of you may be asking, “What is the NCAA Clearinghouse?” Well the NCAA website provides us with a great definition:

NCAA Clearinghouse: It is a registration process that qualifies and certifies student-athletes so college coaches can be confident that the student-athlete has completed certain academic requirements for eligibility. The Clearinghouse basically acts as a stamp of approval of student-athletes for college coaches. It helps coaches qualify student-athletes for their University.

The Clearinghouse allows NCAA D I and D II coaches to quickly and easily sort through athletes so they know that you are academically eligible to compete at their University. It saves them time instead of having to deal directly with your high school counselor.

Signing up for the NCAA Clearinghouse is easy. You can sign up at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net

REAL LIFE CLEARINGHOUSE STORY

A high school coach told me about one of his players that had a full-ride scholarship to a school in Northern California to play basketball. The college is a good academic school, and the student-athlete was coming from a prestigious high school. The college coach assumed the athlete was cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse. Well, when the athlete got up to college, and the coach found out the student-athlete had not registered for the Clearinghouse, the student almost lost his scholarship…even though he was an academic qualifier.

If you want to play your freshman year, it is critical that you are registered with the Clearinghouse. There is typically a fee involved, and there are ways you can get it subsidized.

The important thing is that you do well in the classroom, prepare for your SAT/ACT’s, and be sure to get yourself signed up for the Clearinghouse at the end of your Junior academic year.

Learn more about NCAA Clearinghouse. Stop by Coach Chris Berg’s site where you can find out all about Athletic Scholarships and how you can get one.

How To Maximize Your Official Recruiting Visits

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Did you know that you are allowed ONLY 5 Official Recruiting Visits? Do you have all of your recruiting visits scheduled with the coach that is recruiting you? Be sure to schedule your recruiting visits as soon as possible, so you can make your final collegiate decision. Have a lot of fun on your recruiting trip and BE SURE to make it a BUSINESS TRIP!

When I took my recruiting trip to Stanford my senior year, I had a blast! I had a chance to meet OUTSTANIDNG players from all over the country. I was teamed up with a great guy on the team to show me around campus, classes, and introduce me to the Palo Alto area. We went out to an AMAZING restaurant in Palo Alto. There was about 20 of us in the restaurant chowing down…I am glad I didnt have to pay that bill :) In the midst of all my fun, I made sure that I kept my wits, and I approached my visit as a business trip.

Why is this important?

One of the first things a coach will do once you leave is call the person that hosted you on your trip and find out all about you from your host. He will grill the person with questions such as:

Do you think he would fit into our program?

Did he keep his wits while he was around you?

How did he behave when you were out and about?

These are just a few questions a coach will ask his players, and my point is that the coach is going to grill the person he teamed you up with to make sure you seem to be a student-athlete that will fit into his program.

KEY STRATEGIES ON A RECRUITING TRIP:

1. PREPARE: Write down all your questions before your trip, so when you get on campus you are prepared to get your questions answered.

2. Do the RIGHT Thing while on campus – typically the person you are teamed up with will take you to a party. DO NOT drink or do drugs (you shouldn’t be doing this anyways) on your visit.

3. Talk to as many of the current players as possible. Find out how they feel about the campus, coaches, other players, professors, etc. This is important

4. Also, be sure to talk to as many students as possible as well. You can learn a lot from talking to the student body.

The Best College Football Teams to Start the Season

Friday, August 28th, 2009

8. SEC’s – Ole Miss. The rebels are a team with a real chance of moving up in the voters eyes throughout the season because of 2 reasons. 1. They play in the SEC and 2. They have a chance to take on Florida in the SEC Championship game. Jevon Snead “The Tebow Slayer” has proven he can beat Florida and wants a chance to prove they are the best in the nation. Starting the season at # 8 with no real threats to losing until week 5 against Alabama and week 10/11 against Tennessee and LSU, respectively, they are highly favored to win the SEC West and meet the Gators in Atlanta. More likely to play in the BCS Sugar Bowlagainst a BigEast team.

7. Virginia Tech. A bit under the radar this year after a letdown in 2008, as the team lost four games. However, there’s really not much competition in the ACC and the Hokies should start out at number seven for that reason. A tough schedule may force them to sink in the rankings.

6. Ohio State. I could see Ohio State back in the national title game, assuming the team wins the games it’s supposed to. Terrell Pryor will do some great things for this team, and if they don’t make the BCS championship, a Rose Bowl is in the cards.

5. Alabama. It looks like Alabama has a good shot at the national title game this season. The only real things that stand in the way are LSU, Tennessee, and Ole Miss. Still, this team could easily finish with two losses or less.

4. USC. A very young team, but possibly the most talented one in football. The inexperience makes it difficult to believe they’ll go all the way, but an early match-up against Ohio State will set the tone for the season. I expect good things either way.

3. Big 12′s – Oklahoma. Oklahoma Sooners are a big favorite to upset Texas and represent the Big 12 in the Championship game. With returning Heisman winner Bradford and a returning receiver lineup that put up record numbers last year. Oklahoma has a tough schedule including BYU, Miami, Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska, and Oklahoma St, whom allthey should defeat.Oklahoma’s only speed bump and possible detour will be Texas in week 6. The winner of that game will represent 1 half of the BCS title game. If they miss the Title game they will more than likely play in theFiesta Bowl against the ACC or Undefeated WAC/MAC team.

2. Texas. The Longhorns are simply one of the best out there, and Colt McCoy should have a huge season, as he’s eyeing a Heisman. There aren’t many better defenses out there and Texas remains a favorite to make the title game.

1. Florida. As long as Tim Tebow is on the team, there’s no reason to discount this team’s ability. Almost all of the entire team last season (besides Harvin and Nelson) is back for another season, and Florida has the experience and the talent to go all away. The Gators are the favorites entering the season.
